Organization
The NRTDP builds on the successful organizational structure already established by the Proteomics Center of Excellence (Fig. Administration 1). The resource will be overseen by the Director, Dr. Neil Kelleher. He will be provide leadership and direction to the key components of the resource and will be fully engaged in the all of its activities, ensuring the achievement of the resource’s long-term goals. The dual focus of a Biomedical Technology Research Resource (BTRR) between developing cutting edge technology and providing first rate biological analysis to collaborators directly mirrors the structure already in place at the Proteomics Center of Excellence. As in the PCE, each of these ventures will be headed by Associate Directors working closely with, and reporting directly to, Dr. Kelleher. The resource’s four TR&D projects will be overseen Dr. Phil Compton, currently the Director of Instrumentation in the PCE. He will work with the TR&D project leaders (and will serve as project leader on TR&D 1 and 2) to ensure the progress in on each of the four TR&Ds and efficient integration of each DBPs. The management of each of the DBPs and Collaboration and Service projects as well as the Training and Dissemination will be overseen by Dr. Paul Thomas, currently the Associate Director of the PCE (this will bring him in to a limited extent to serve as a consultant for TR&D 3 as well). As with the TR&Ds, a team lead will be assigned to each of these components of the resource. Dr. Thomas will work with these team leads to monitor progress to collaborative projects and will interface with Dr.’s Compton and Kelleher as technical needs/drivers become apparent. Working with the senior leadership staff will be a team of existing staff scientists and software developers. These individuals are current employees of the PCE and have been working with Dr. Kelleher anywhere from one to ten years. Several of them have been described below. Given the depth of knowledge and variation in skill sets already on hand, the projects proposed herein will be quick to progress in the early stages. In addition to overseeing each of their individual TR&Ds, each of our senior scientists will play an important role in the Training and Dissemination (see these sections of the research strategy for more details). As the administrative workload associated with the operation of the resource is anticipated to be high, Ms. Haylee Thomas will serve as the Assistant Director of Administration for the NRTDP. The interactions between projects in the NRTDP will prove to be complex (with each DBP driving multiple TR&Ds and each TR&D affecting the progress of the others). We therefore anticipate the need to increase the number of staff members upon funding of this project in order to maintain consistent progress of the various drivers.
Scientific and Technical Expertise of Staff. The NRTDP is designed under the model of senior staff members driving each of the technology development and biomedical research aspects of the resource.
